Have you noticed that your door is harder to open and close? Perhaps you’ve seen its shape get changed over time. These are signs that door warping has occurred. Warping is a common issue for doors to face, and there are many reasons why it could happen. Keep reading to find out why door warping occurs, and what you can do to address this issue.

Causes of Door Warping

Warping is a problem that happens when your wooden door is exposed to above-average levels of humidity, moisture, or heat. The amount of warping you experience will vary, depending on the type of wood you have, and the amount of heat, moisture, and humidity in the environment.

Typically, it’s easier to see warping in external doors because these doors are more exposed to the outdoor weather conditions. Fortunately, there are ways to combat door warping and make it less likely to occur.

How to Prevent Door Warping

While warping can be a problem, it’s a problem that has many solutions. To start, you can apply a sealant along your door. You’ll want to apply several coats of sealant to make sure that the edges of your door don’t have the chance to collect moisture.

Sealant is a good preventative measure to combat warping, but if your door is already bent, what you do next will depend on the severity of the damage. If you have a small amount of warping, you can take the door from its hinges, fill and smooth out any cracks it has, and remove its varnish or coating. Then, reinstall your door, making sure you apply sealant so that this problem doesn’t happen again.

For greater warping damage, your approach should be different. Instead, you should lie it down and get some heavy items to help weigh your door down. Your door might need to be left for a few days while it adjusts itself. After the door has been straightened out, you can reinstall it. You’ll want to apply sealant during the reinstallation to prevent future warping.
