Types of Wood Decking You Could Install

Take a look at these different kinds of wood decking that you could install.

Decks are great features to install for people’s homes. They extend how much outdoor living space you have, and they can be utilized in a variety of ways, whether you use your deck as a spot to entertain guests, or you use it as a relaxing spot to unwind after a stressful day. One of the more popular decking materials people use is wood, and there are many types of wood that you could consider using for your installation. Take a look at these different kinds of wood decking that you could install.

Redwood & Cedar Wood Decking

These kinds of wood decking are quite beautiful, and they promote a more classic and natural aesthetic for your yard. While these two kinds of wood are often put into the same category, there are certain distinctions between them.

Redwood, as the name implies, has more of a red tint. Cedar, on the other hand, looks more yellow. You should consider the look of your home so you can decide which type of decking best complements your home’s aesthetic.

There are also differences in cost and durability. Redwood tends to be the sturdier pick, but cedar gets the edge in terms of cost, so you’ll want to look at your budget and decide which deck type works best with the money you’ve put aside for your project.

The only downside these wood types have is that they are fairly high-maintenance. While they have rot resistance, the weather can wear these decks down over time. That’s why you’ll want to clean and seal them every year in order to give these decks the protection they need.

Pressure-Treated Wood Decking

Pressure-treated wood decking is another popular option. These decks are often made with softwood (typically pine), and they go through chemical preservation treatments in order to become more resistant to damage from insects and moisture.

This is a budget-friendly decking solution, and it will often last you for a long time with proper care. Just make sure you stay on top of power washing, sealing, and staining your deck, all of which should be done every one or two years.

You’ll also want to be wary of splinters, as they can be painful, and possibly cause infections because of the chemicals these decks use. For this reason, we don’t recommend pressure-treated wood decking if you have pets or small children.
