If you’re looking to expand your living space into the outdoors, decks and patios are great additions to your home. No matter which option you select, you’re going to have a new space that provides you with endless entertainment opportunities! Whether you’re hosting guests, enjoying lounging, or simply spending time outdoors — a patio or deck is an excellent addition to your home. Additionally, choosing a patio or deck will ultimately provide your entire family with fantastic, open-air spaces. But, what choice is right for you? A new deck or patio?

Deck or Patio: Consider Your View vs. Privacy

Are you looking for the best view possible? A new deck will be your best bet, which could also depend on whether great views are available from your home’s location. However, that also leaves you out in the open, meaning that you’re not going to have very much privacy when enjoying your deck. If you live in a denser neighborhood or are concerned with privacy, a patio is going to offer you a much more quiet and secluded experience at the cost of not giving you a view of your surrounding landscape.

Deck or Patio: Both Have Different Levels of Prep

Typically, building a deck is going to require jumping through a few hoops. This usually depends on where you live, but most of the time, decks require a building permit and inspections. In contrast, patios are typically easier to build without those concerns as they’re a more simple addition to make.

Deck or Patio: Different Costs

If you’re trying to save a pretty penny, you may want to go with a patio, which is typically going to cost less depending on what materials you use. Patios are more cost-effective because you can use cheaper building materials like concrete or stone, whereas decks are usually made of wood or composite. You’ll also spend less money on maintenance with a patio, though that can vary depending upon the overall size of your patio.

Deck or Patio: The Terrain

Where are you building? It’s an important question because if you’re dealing with very uneven terrain, it may not be worth it to level the ground out to make a patio, especially if you live on a steep hill. On the other hand, a deck can be built off of existing structures that are level, so you don’t have to worry about any restrictions because of the terrain you’re working with.

Consider The Amount of Maintenance You’ll Need

Busy homeowners may not want to deal with staining, painting, and power washing a new deck to keep the beautiful look. While some decking materials require less maintenance, a patio will require the least amount of maintenance because all it takes is a good hosing off to get clean again.
