This winter has seen heavy snowfall from Storm Jonas and flooding from recent storms this week. As we prepare our homes for spring, it’s important to inspect certain parts of your home for damage and make repairs where needed. Here are a few things to look for as you prepare your home for spring.
Roof
Heavy snowfall, rain, and winds can dislodge shingles from your roof. Missing shingles can allow moisture into the home, which can lead to mold growth, weather damage on your roof’s wooden framing, and compromised structural integrity. Look for shingles in your yard or missing shingles on your roof. If you find any dislodged shingles, call a contractor to repair them for you.
Gutters
Clear winter debris out of your gutters and check that the gutters are securely attached to your home. Gutters that are blocked with debris can back up and allow water into your home and damage trim.
Leaks
Attics, basements, crawl spaces, and washing machine hoses are all common culprits for leaks. Check these areas to make sure you do not have any leaks. Also check under your sinks for damage from frozen pipes and your water heater for corrosion.
Inspect Siding
Heavy winds can cause siding to come loose. Prepare your home for spring by walking around your home and checking for any siding that may have come loose during the winter.
Windows and Doors
Windows and doors come with seals that keep moisture and weather out of your home. Examine the exterior of your doors and windows to make sure that this seal is still airtight and to further prepare your home for spring.
HVAC
Before hot temperatures arrive, call a qualified HVAC technician to make sure your HVAC system is prepared to work properly during the warm seasons. Now is the best time to replace your HVAC filters as well.
Driveway
Moisture absorbed by your concrete or asphalt can expand when cold weather sets in, creating cracks. Pooled water underneath your asphalt can soften the underlying ground and create potholes. If you’ve noticed any of this winter damage to your driveway, try to patch up the damage to prevent further moisture from being absorbed.
