Mistakes That Can Be Made During a Door Installation

There are a number of mistakes that can be made in the middle of a door installation.

Perhaps a door in your house is looking damaged, or you don’t like the look of it in your home. In situations like these, getting a new door installed can be an inspired idea. The problem with door installations is that they’re not easy to perform, unless you have extensive expertise getting them installed. There are a number of mistakes that can be made in the middle of a door installation.

Unevenness Along the Top

The top of your door has to be even. If it’s not, this will cause your door to collect pressure over time. Your door will also begin warping as moisture levels fluctuate. When your door hangs with even tension, however, it’ll have no problem lasting for many years.

Not Using the Proper Hinge Screws

With the proper hinge screws, your door will maintain its stability. Unfortunately, a door installation can go wrong when the screws you pick aren’t the right ones. Screws that are too small will cause your door to migrate gradually as time passes. Eventually, this will stop your door from shutting or allow it to rub against your floor.

Tightening Your Screws Too Much

The length of the screws isn’t the only thing that’s important about them. For a successful door installation, these screws must also be tightened correctly. When they’re tightened too much, your slab could start warping as a result of uneven tension. It can help to either seek professional help with the installation, or find an installation manual, should you choose to go the DIY route.

Putting Your Shims in Backwards

Shims are tiny wedges of wood that are used to keep your door level while you’re getting it installed. You put them between your frame and the jambs. When putting in the shims, however, it’s important to put them in correctly.

You want the thick end towards the hinge pin because this lets it close effectively. Installing shims in reverse could mean that the door won’t fit into its frame, resulting in damage to your door.
