Buying Lumber: A Few Do’s and Dont’s

Buying Lumber: A Few Dos and Donts Fisher Lumber

Buying lumber from us means that you’ll have high-quality options with structural integrity

Buying lumber is less daunting of a task when you trust a full-service lumber yard like Fisher Lumber. Although you can bring your concerns and questions to our knowledgeable team and although us to take care of you, we’d still like to offer a guide. You can think of this as a lumber buying guide for beginners: the more pitfalls that we can help you avoid, the better.

Do Consider Buying Thicker Lumber

What’s excellent about us being a full-service lumber yard is that we provide our customers with custom cuts. However, if you’re determined to tackle a DIY project, buying thicker lumber than what you need is ideal. If you’re sanding down a board or planing it down, you may lose a little bit off the top. It’s never a bad idea to buy boards 1/4″ thicker than what you need so that you won’t throw off your measurements.

Don’t Buy Just Enough Lumber.

When you explain your project’s scope to us, we can help you determine the right of wood that you’re going to need. We advise never buying lumber that covers the range of your project just enough because there is always room for mistakes or errors. This concept is true of anything in life. We’re not saying to double up on your resources, but it helps more than hurts to have a few spare boards. Tiny mistakes can cost you extra time and money, so being extra cautious will always work.

Do Consider Buying Longer Boards

Sometimes overmeasuring or under measuring can happen. If this happens, you may find that you may have to scrap a few boards. It’s always useful to have longer boards to buffer any mistakes and finish the construction project quicker.

Don’t Neglect To Pick the Right Color, Shade, and Tone Of Lumber.

Buying lumber is super-efficient when you put consistency at the forefront. If you’re buying in bulk, make sure that you check the wood and give it a once-over for more than only curves, knots, and straightness. Even if you’re going to sand, stain, or refinish your lumber, little variations can cause frustration. When checking the consistency and integrity of lumber, a rule of thumb is spritzing it with a little bit of water. Luckily, here at Fisher Lumber, our lumber is high-quality and winning in structural integrity.
