When it comes time to seal and finish a wood countertop, everyone has a different way of doing it. If you ask 10 different people, you may get 11 different answers. There are a lot of different opinions out there when it comes to finishes, most likely because every situation is different and requires a different approach. Here are some different options you have when it comes time to seal and finish your wood countertop. Consider them carefully to make sure that your needs and tastes are met and you are happy with the finished product.

Rubio Monocoat

Monocoat is in a class of products which is referred to as Hard Wax Oils. These products have been popular in Europe for almost 30 years and have only gained popularity in the United States in recent years. Rubio Monocoat has a boiled linseed oil base with additional waxes and catalytic driers. This means that it is designed specifically to form a strong molecular bond with the cellulose fibers in the wood. It works as a penetrating oil to give wood a deeper and richer color as well as a satin sheen that helps the texture of a wood countertop shine.

Waterlox Brand Tung Oil

This oil is extracted from dried nuts of the Chinese tung tree. It has been used for hundreds of years to protect and seal wood, particularly wooden ships. Pure tung oil on its own is not recommended for countertops, floors, and high traffic areas because it is prone to water spotting and attracting dirt. The Waterlox brand, however, incorporates a mixture resins and other ingredients to make it useful and effective.

Thick Epoxy Pour

This makes a strong and long lasting seal, but will mask the feel and texture of wood. It essentially is like putting a thick coat of plastic on your countertop, dresser, or other object comprised of wood. It is expensive, but will make for an incredibly durable and long lasting surface.
