An old home looks charming with a screen door, but replacing the original with a brand new one will look and function much better.

A screen door is an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors without being bothered by unwanted insects and other troubling pests. However, they can be prone to breaking. Take a look at these handy tips so you will know just what to do when it comes time to repair your screen door.

What To Do When Faced With A Small Tear In Your Screen Door

Small tears are relatively simple to fix. You can purchase screen repair tape of a screen patch. Both of these can be used and will quickly make a screen door useable once again. However, if there is a very large tear or other excessive damage, replacing your screen door will be a far better option.

What You Need To Replace A Screen Door

In order to replace a screen, you will need a few basic materials and tools. These include a flathead screwdriver, screw gun, tape measure, utility knife, a piece of scrap lumber, staple gun, finishing nails, and a brand new screen. This new screen can be made from either aluminum or fiberglass. Aluminum screens have the benefit of being more long lasting and sturdy, but fiberglass screens offer the benefit of transparency. If you are looking to enjoy not only a fresh summer breeze but also a nice view of the outdoors, this screen will better suit your needs.

How To Replace A Screen Door

After selecting a new screen, remove your door from its hinges, as well as the molding that is holding the screen in place. Use the tape measure to measure the opening where the screen was before you removed it. Add six inches of length and three of width and cut a piece of screen to fix these new measurements. Lay the screen out flat using the scrap wood to hold it down, and use the staple gun to stick it to the door. Cut away and excess with your utility knife, attach the molding with finishing nails, and then rehang the door on its hinges.
