Determining the Right Window Size For Your Home

Determining the Right Window Size For Your Home

Here are factors that will affect what window size you should choose for your home.

While they aren’t the highlight of your home, windows have a big role to play within your home’s interior. They help your house get the light and ventilation it needs throughout the year, while offering insulation as needed to keep your house at the temperature you want. In order for a window to function properly, however, it needs to be the appropriate size. That’s why, when you’re picking out windows to install, it’s crucial for you to select the window size that’s best for your situation. Here are factors that will affect what window size you should choose for your home.

Building Codes

Be wary of any building codes your home might need to follow. The windows you pick will have to abide by the standards that are set within these codes. Try speaking with your window installation company before you decide what windows to get. This way, they can tell you what types of windows will be allowed to be installed so that you don’t have to remove them as quickly as you install them.

Height of the Window Sill

The height of the window sill is the height between the ground and the  lowest part of the window. Be aware that you might need to use your windows as an emergency escape path, and building codes may require you to factor that into the window size you choose. That’s why sill height should generally never exceed 44 inches.

Head Height of the Window

In contrast to window sill height, which is the distance from the base of your window to the ground, the head height is determined by tracking the distance from the top of a window to the ceiling. The taller a window is, the more natural light you get, which could play into your decision. Keep in mind, however, that once your head height gets too close to your roof, you’ll be unable to get a curtain rod installed. You’ll also want to factor how you’ll maintain your windows, as shorter windows can be reached more easily.
