Decorate your Deck this Winter

decorate deck winter

A potted evergreen and some winter decorations will liven up your deck for the holidays!

By now, you’ve probably winterized your deck to make sure that it looks good and is structurally sound when you’re ready to use it again in the spring. However, you can still get use out of your deck during the cold winter season. Your deck is an extension of your home. Depending on how your house is situated, a deck can even add to your curb appeal. Make your deck look pleasing from both inside and outside of your home by decorating it for the holidays!

Lights

Christmas lights are a great way to make your deck look festive and inviting during the holidays. You can incorporate your deck lighting into the Christmas lighting for the rest of your home to create a cohesive, impressive effect. If you have a solid, light-colored wall on one side of your deck, you could even set up a projector to project holiday images to entertain your neighborhood. Or, you can decide to go simple by just stringing a few strands of plain lights on the overhang above your deck. The best thing about this decorating route is that you can leave these lights up all year long for a fun, easy-going effect!

Garlands and Wreaths

Garlands of pine, holly, and/or ribbon create a more traditional effect. A well-placed wreath upon the door to your deck or the fencing around your deck is an impressive and festive accent. Wreaths and garlands combined are a classy touch to make your home look sophisticated and ready for the holidays. Accentuate your garlands and wreaths by adding extra pinecones, bows, or ornaments. Before you know it, your home will look like it came straight out of an old-fashioned Currier and Ives print!

Evergreen Plants

If you’re thinking long-term, working in evergreen plants into your landscaping will help you to create beautiful winter scenery. You can plant evergreen plants around your deck or have them potted on your deck. If they are potted, however, make sure to move them about once a season so that they do not leave discoloration on your deck. Since evergreen plants do not lose their foliage during the winter, they provide a refreshing dose of greenery when everything else has lost their leaves. You can even decorate your evergreen plants with lights, ribbons, or ornaments for an especially Christmas-y effect.
